Big Plans for Leicestershire Shop Owner

Some people think it’s better to hold back on big projects and shop refits in this ever-changing financial climate, but not so for a Leicestershire man who has gone all out to convert a tired-looking furniture show room in Barwell into a fresh looking Londis store.

Before the refit

As you can see this wasn't just a quick lick of paint or replacing a few ceiling tiles - the property needed a full refit and major building work. The shop was split in two with a brick supporting wall, and since this layout wouldn't work for a convenience store, the wall had to go...

Removing the wall opened up the whole the shop floor, providing an expanse of wall space which has been maximised buy installing large runs of multidec chillers and double door freezers.

Shop with stud wall

With the wall was taken out, steel support beams were added to take the weight of the upstairs floor and roof trusses. A new floor was added using light coloured floor tiles which give the property a nice bright feel - this was also necessary to make the floor level which made our job a lot easier when it came to fitting the retail shelving!

The whole of the existing ceiling was removed and a new suspended ceiling installed. Modern lighting was fitted and extra lights added to brighten the shop. All this work has really transformed the shop from an old dark building to a modern and inviting retail space.

Work in progress

Retail shelving was added in between the chillers, including magazine shelving and wall shelving units. Two runs of gondola shelving was placed in the centre of the floor, adding direction and flow around the store. Finally, end bays were added to each gondola run to maximise the floor space and give a professional look.

Installation of Gondola Shelving

A four metre counter was installed and wire stacking baskets added for crisps and confectionery items, helping to encourage impulse buys whilst customers queue at the till and allowing the store to maximise on sales.

Wire dump bins were also added around the store to fill awkward spaces and make the shop look more interesting. After all the retail shelving had been assembled it was clear to determine any blind spots around the shop and where CCTV cameras could be installed.

CCTV behind Counter

Londis organised and fitted the shop front signs on the outside of the property which completely transformed the look of the old furniture showroom into a modern and inviting convenience store.

Then all that was left to do was merchandise the shop shelving and start trading! The
Shelving4Shops team wish them every success for all their hard work, and we look forward to working with them on their next projects.
Stocked Gondola Shelving
Along with all of the shelving and accessories mentioned above, Shelving4shops stocks a full range of quality shelving which we now offer in cream, black and grey:

- Gondola - A classic choice when it comes to shelving, this is a highly versatile style of shelving for all types of products and can be used with our range of shelving accessories to give a custom space to suit your store.
- Magazine Units - Magazine units ensure you can present your paper goods in an effective way to draw in customers as the front cover needs to be on view.
- Shelves and Accessories - Customise your shelving with our vast range of accessories, we have everything you will need to divide, label and hold any product you are looking to display in your store.
- Corner Shelving - Often due to the shape of traditional shelving the corners of shops get left unused but corner shelving ensures that every square inch of your floor space is being utilised.
- Peg Board Gondola Shelving - If you have products that would be better displayed hanging up rather than flat on a shelf then pegboard shelving is the perfect solution.

Store Advice Part 1 – The Basics

Opening a store can be a tricky business, particularly if it is your first store. Shelving4Shops is here to help every step of the way - from designing and planning to the supply of your retail shelving.

We know that ensuring customers have a great experience in your store means repeat business, and it's these regular clients that keep a store going through the good and the bad. In a series of blog posts we're going to look at some useful tips on setting up and maintaining a successful shop. Here's part 1 - the basics:

1) The Entrance – It might seem obvious but simple things like making the entrance to your store free from clutter is vital. Your entrance also needs to make it easy for pushchairs or wheelchair users to access the store. Shopping baskets should be located close to the front entrance and should be kept clean and in good order so that customers will want to collect one as they pass. Do you need to upgrade your shopping baskets, perhaps purchase some with wheels? Would shopping trolleys be required for your store? These are all questions that you should ask yourself when opening your doors for the first time.

2) The Walk Round – Take a walk around your store and look at things from a customer's perspective. Are the aisles wide enough for disabled customers? Will that box or pillar stop pushchairs getting through? When planning your shop it is easy to forget details like pillars and awkward corners, so if you have a complicated space make a real life floor plan. Spending half a day doing this can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. At Shelving4Shops we're more than happy to go over your floor plan with you to help you choose the perfect shop fittings and shelving to suit your requirements. Once the store is set up keep the floor free from obstructions and make sure your stock is placed neatly on your shop shelving so that nothing protrudes out into the aisle.

3) Lighting – A flickering overhead light is very distracting and can make your store look unmaintained. If you have faulty or blown tubes or lamps make sure you replace them as soon as possible. Be aware that insects can sometimes get trapped in your lighting, so make it part of your cleaning routine to remove these regularly. Good lighting is essential - a dark and gloomy store is not inviting so make sure you use all of the natural light available and keep your overhead and wall lights well maintained. Lighting can also be used to draw attention to your retail shelving or display stands if you have any special offers.

Old and Tired Lighting
New Bright and Clean Lighting

4) Smell and Cleanliness – You know the trick of increasing the chance of selling your house by brewing coffee or baking bread or biscuits to make it inviting? Well the same applies to your store. The smell of a store really depends on what you are selling - for instance, a convenience store might have the smell of freshly baked bread or fresh fruit and vegetables as soon as you walk in the door, and a cafĂ© would do well to have the aroma of fresh coffee and cakes. Bad smells, on the other hand, can put customers off before they even reach the door. Make sure your store is clean and tidy, from the shop window to the store room. Nothing will damage your business more than a bad reputation and this can come from something as small as being untidy and badly smelling.

5) Maintaining Standards – So many times we have seen stores open and be fitted out with brand new gondola shelving and magazine racks only to go back three years later and see a tired looking store with broken EPOS and grubby plastic strips, and, on occasion, dented or missing shelving. These things are of course likely to happen in a busy store, which is why Shelving4Shops not only sells complete shelving units but also their component parts, so if you're in need of a new shop shelf, brackets, or back panels just give us a call and we can help.

Pegboard Shop Shelving

Pegboard shelving is a great choice for stores with a wide range of products. Pegboard backing can be applied to wall shelving, gondola shelving and end bays to provide versatile shelving space for your stock, whatever it may be. Shelves and hooks can be attached at different heights to the pegboard to create a completely bespoke shelving arrangement so that you can stack, line up, or hang products according to your needs.

Pegboard shelving works well in convenience stores, pet shops, hardware shops,  jewellery and accessory shops, shoe shops, warehouses, and many other retail stores. The great thing about pegboard shelving is the ability to adapt the display according to the stock you have. Products can be displayed at a range of heights, and fixtures are often interchangeable with Slatwall shelving, so if you decide to change your shop shelving at a later date, there's no need to buy a completely new set of shelving accessories.

As well as pegboard shelving we stock a full range of new shelving in cream, black and grey including:

  • Wall Shelving - As well as our pegboard wall shelving we have regular wall shelving with flat shelves, this is an excellent shelving option to use around the perimeter of your store.
  • Gondolas - These are a very popular option in stores due to their versatility, they can be used to make aisles throughout your store and connect seamlessly with our other bays.
  • Shelves and Accessories - Customise the shelving you have with our range of accessories, from risers to tags we have everything you need to ensure your shelving works for your store.
  • End Bays - The end of aisles have a lot of foot traffic as people navigate the store, utilise this traffic to display sale items or impulse purchase items.
  • Corner Shelving - Traditional shelving often blocks the corner of a store, using a corner shelving unit you can make the most of the space you have!

We buy and sell new and used pegboard shelving at Shelving4Shops, so whether you're selling on pegboard shelving that you no longer need, or are looking for pegboard units to fit out your store, visit our showroom in Leicestershire or get in touch to find out how much you could save on your shop shelving with Shelving4Shops!

Shop Shelving Organisational Tips

When organising your shop shelving, it's important to think about the flow of your store traffic, the types of products you will be displaying, and the best way to maximise sales. You'll also need to consider keeping high-value items safe from theft, and fragile items safe from damage and breakage. Here are a few shop shelving organisational tips to help you to make the perfect plan for your store:
  • Make the best of your space. Create an efficient floor plan (Shelving4Shops can help you with this if necessary!) that utilises all the possible space in your store so that you have space for a good variety of stock.
  • Keep your shop shelving in good, clean condition. A neat and tidy shop is far more appealing than messy shelves in bad condition. If you need to update your shelving units give us a call - we also stock second-hand shop shelving (in excellent condition) if your budget is tight.
  • Make use of awkward areas and corners with dump bins and wire stacking baskets so that there is no wasted space. These types of shelving accessories are great for end-of-line stock, promotional items and products that do not stack well on a shelf.
  • Keep your shelves well stocked - half-empty shelves makes you store look as though it's not regularly re-stocked and maintained. If you only have a small amount of a certain product left that you need to display, choose a small area or end bay to display them or draw attention to them with a discount or promotion.
  • Place complementary items together to make it easy for customers to find what they need and to encourage additional purchases. For example burgers and buns, snacks and soft drinks etc.
  • Keep valuables up high, behind the counter or within sight at all times. Similarly, keep anything breakable on high shelves to avoid them being picked up by children.
  • Use shelf risers and dividers to segregate products neatly and efficiently. This will not only make it easier for customers to find what they're looking for, but it will also make it easier for you to re-stock your shelves.
  • Choose the right kind of shop shelving for your products. Pegboard shelving is great for hanging small items and different sized products; gondola shelving helps to create aisles in your store and maximises shelf space; end bays help to make your shelving runs look neat and provide a space for promotional products.
At Shelving4shops we offer a full range of shop shelving, now available in cream, black and grey including:

  • Wall Shelving - A popular shelving option to place around the perimeter of your store, these bays sit flush against the wall giving you the maximum display space possible.
  • Gondolas - This is the most popular choice for classic shelving in stores, it can be used to create aisles throughout a store and we stock 4 widths and 4 heights to ensure we have the correct size to suit your store.
  • Magazine Units - The front cover of a magazine is the biggest selling point, using specialist shelving ensures that you display magazines or any paper goods in the most appealing way possible to customers to encourage purchases.
  • Shelves and Accessories - Customise your shelving to maximise your shelving units with our extensive range of shelving accessories and make the most of the shelving you have.
  • End Bays - The end of aisles receives a lot of foot traffic from customers navigating the store, this makes this space an excellent place to display sale and impulse purchase items.
  • Corner Shelving - Use corner shelving to fill that forgotten back corner of your store and utilise every inch of floor space you in your store.
  • Peg Board Wall Shelving - Peg board shelving is excellent if you have lots of items that do not sit well on a shelf. You can add hooks to hang items or when you need more flat space you can add shelves to the pegboard to ensure you are always using the space.
  • Peg Board Gondola Shelving - These bays offer you space to hang items that do not sit well on a flat surface. These bays can be used in connection with our other bay units to create seamless displays.

Shelving4Shops Clear Used Shelving from the Olympic Village

It might not have been a gold medal event but it certainly was a golden opportunity to help dismantle some of the Olympic Village! This used shelving was easy to dismantle and with our skilled team on hand, the job took us just a day complete.

Being so professional on-site made the Olympic clean-up team’s job much easier and they were happy to see all of the shelving and uprights come down in a safe and timely manner.

Shelving4Shops is happy to quote for used shop shelving, and offer a dismantling service for larger stores, including supermarkets.

We not only offer used shop shelving but we are also able to supply and fit new shelving, so if we don’t have enough second hand shop shelving you could top up by mixing it with some new! We have the following new shelving available along with many more:
  • Vegetable and fruit displays - Many stores now sell fresh produce as customers are likely to repurchase frequently due to its short shelf life. Fruit and vegetables are a product that consumers like to pick up and visually inspect before purchasing so it is important to use a display system that caters to this. Using baskets and trays ensures that all the produce will not fall to the floor once customers start purchasing goods.
  • Gondola shelving units - A classic shelving option in many stores, gondola shelving is highly versatile and comes in a 4 heights and 4 widths to ensure you find the perfect match for your store.
  • Magazine shelving units - The best way to display magazines is upright so customers can quickly and easily see the front cover which is often the main selling point. These units can be used for any paper goods where it is important to the sale to see the front, e.g. greeting cards.
  • Corner shelving systems - Make the most of the floor space you have by placing corner shelving units in those overlooked corners of your store.
  • Wall shelving bays - If you are limited on space using wall shelving bays ensure you can use your floor space to create aisles and allow shoppers to easily navigate through your store.

A Range of Shop Shelving for a New London Store

When Mr Patel first contacted us at Shelving4Shops he was amazed at our retail shelving prices - the quotes he had previously received at other stores were almost double!

Without hesitation he ordered several runs of high gondola shelving with a mixture of peg board and plain back panels with shelving to add an interesting feel to his shop.

Mr Patel also took advantage our high end bays allowing him to add stock at the end of his runs. When we had finished, the shop was looking smart, clean and fresh - ready for all the new stock he had coming in that day.

The Shelving4Shops team left a very satisfied customer, excited about his new venture and we all wish him the very best of luck!

We stock a full range of new shop shelving to ensure that we have the perfect solution for you and your store:

- Wall Shelving - Make sure you use every inch of floor space you have available by using wall shelving around the perimeter of your store. This style of shelving ensures you have plenty of aisles space while still giving you room to display your items.
Gondolas - The classic shelving choice for many stores, gondola shelving can be used in a multitude of ways making it a handy versatile shelving option to have in your store. We offer 4 heights and 4 widths of gondola shelving to ensure we have the perfect fit for you and your store.
- Magazine Units - The biggest selling point of many magazines is the front cover, because of this it is important to find the correct way to display them. Using magazine units to display paper goods ensures that customers can view the front of the paper goods, like greetings cards, which is how many people choose the sale.
- Shelves and Accessories - Ensure your shelving options work for you by adding accessories and customising your shelves. The simple addition of dividers can ensure that products stay neatly displayed on shelves and that products do not get mixed up allowing customers to find items more easily. Clear price and information labelling is also
- End Bays - One of the biggest areas of foot traffic is at the end of aisles, this makes it the perfect place to put promotional items or impulse purchase items to encourage customers to pick up a few last minute treats before heading to the checkout.
- Corner Shelving - Due to the shape of conventional shelving bays, corners are often lost or not used in many stores. The simple addition of a corner shelving unit can open up space and utilise every inch of floor space that you have.
- Peg Board Wall Shelving - Not all products will sit nicely on a flat shelf, often products need to be hung up to ensure that they are optimally displayed. Using per board shelving allows you to add hooks to hand items and if you no longer have hanging items you can add shelving ensuring you use all of your shelving units effectively.

We now have much of our shelving options available in black, grey or cream.

If you would like any help on furnishing your store with new shop shelving or if you are struggling with how to plan the layout of your store, please contact our team on 01455 221512.

- Peg Board Gondola Shelving - If you have items that need to be hung up and do not sit well on a flat shelf then pegboards are the way forward. You can attach hooks to give you plenty of hanging space or attach shelves to ensure you never have a dead space in your store.
